Medical knitwear for the prevention and treatment of varicose veins, various stages of lymphostasis (lymphedema) of the upper and lower extremities

Compression, medical hosiery (anti-varicose socks, stockings, tights)

Compression has long been used to treat varicose veins of the lower extremities and trophic ulcers. For example, back in the period of Ancient Egypt, bandaged lower extremities with traces of trophic ulcers during life were found in mummies found in Egyptian tombs, i.e. it was the prototype of elastic bandages.

Elastic bandages have both advantages (low price) and disadvantages.

Compression stockings replaced compression bandages. The first compression stockings were made of rubber or rubber thread. But even now, some manufacturers make stockings with rubber thread.

Modern medical compression hosiery maintains optimal water and temperature balances of the skin; is treated with silver ions and has an antibacterial effect; stays on the limbs thanks to the stockings covering the necessary area of the skin, does not slip or fall.

Compression hosiery with graduated compression is now used by millions of people around the world, saving thousands of lives. It is used comprehensively for the prevention and treatment of varicose veins of the lower extremities and not only. There are different degrees of compression.

Compression stockings for sleeping have now appeared. They are very popular in Japan. They relieve swelling and fatigue.

There are compression classes “A” and I, II, III and IV.

Class “A” with compression of no more than 18 mmHg – intended for people with increased static loads on the lower extremities – flight attendants, surgeons, ballet dancers, dancers, etc. For these categories of people, tights, stockings and knee-highs for tourism and sports should be recommended (to achieve good results).

Separately, between Class “A” and 1st degree, and sometimes 2nd degree of compression, there is medical hosiery for childbirth and hospital hosiery – these are special stockings, tights, intended for patients who are in a horizontal position (lying down).

  • I compression class. As well as medical compression hosiery (gloves, stockings, tights) it is intended for the lower extremities with pressure at the ankle level of 18-21 mm Hg. It is used in the early stages of chronic venous insufficiency (heavy legs syndrome, tendency to edema, reticular varicose veins, telangiectasia), in functional phlebopathy, for the prevention of venous insufficiency during pregnancy, as well as for the prevention of deep vein thrombosis.
  • II compression class. This includes medical compression hosiery for the lower extremities with a pressure at the ankle level of 23-32 mm Hg. It is used for varicose veins, in particular in pregnant women, for varicothrombophlebitis, for compression therapy after phlebosclerosis and operations on the veins of the lower extremities, as well as for the prevention of deep vein thrombosis in people at risk.
  • III compression class. The third compression class includes medical compression hosiery for the lower extremities with pressure at the ankle level of 34-46 mm Hg. It is used for varicose veins with trophic disorders and edema, deep vein thrombosis, post-thrombophlebitic syndrome, lymphovenous insufficiency, and for compression therapy after operations on the veins of the lower extremities.
  • IV compression class. This includes medical compression hosiery for the lower extremities with pressure at the ankle level of more than 49 mm Hg. It is used for lymphedema, congenital phlebodysplasia.

Compression hosiery for the treatment of edema

Medical compression anti-lymphatic hosiery can be circular or flat knit. Its task is to maintain the size of the limb after lymphedema treatment. – a key element in the treatment of lipedema and lymphedema of the arms and legs. Compression hosiery for lipedema allows you to stabilize, slow down and stop the progression of edema.

Non-elastic compression garments that are fastened with hook-and-loop fasteners for easy donning and doffing. The ability to set and control therapeutically effective compression makes circaid products unique.

The degree of compression, model, fixation, and other necessary parameters can only be determined by a doctor specializing in the treatment of vascular diseases – a vascular surgeon.

There is also a list of diseases in which wearing compression hosiery is contraindicated. These are diseases of the arteries of the lower extremities, when the systolic pressure on the posterior tibial artery is below 80 mm Hg; severe forms of diabetic polyneuropathy and angiopathy; decompensated cardiopulmonary insufficiency; trophic ulcers of non-venous etiology; acute soft tissue infection; septic phlebitis.

Instructions for selecting medical knitwear

The size of the product is selected according to the individual anatomical measurements of the limb. The upper edge of the medical hosiery should be located 5-10 cm above the level of the vein lesion. If the patient is prone to edema, measurements should be taken in the morning, without getting out of bed.

  • b – circumference at the narrowest part of the lower leg above the ankles;
  • з – circumference at the widest part of the lower leg;
  • d – patella circumference;
  • g – thigh circumference, 5 cm below the groin area;
  • h – circumference of the widest part of the thigh;
  • t – waist circumference;
  • AD – length from heel to measurement d;
  • AG – length from heel to measurement g

Medical compression hosiery of compression class 3 (sometimes) and compression class 4 (always) requires additional measurements and is made to order. The size of the product is determined using the medi size charts.

With mediven compression hosiery, treatment is invisible to those around you. With it, you will always feel comfortable, and most importantly, the use of medical compression hosiery from medi is a guarantee of the effectiveness of your treatment. The result will not take long to wait.
